Developt 1000CLA is a dietary supplement designed to provide an improved exercise and weight loss program. Each capsule contains 1000mg of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) and an unspecified amount of safflower oil.

CLA supplements are slowly growing in popularity and a number of supplement producers offer products that provide a 1000mg dose. Apart from the addition of safflower oil, the only difference between Developt 1000CLA and similar products may be the availability and the price; and many competing products can be purchased more cheaply and have a better level of availability across all territories.

Blend Potential

CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) is fatty acid that is naturally-occurring in meat and dairy products. Many claims are made for its health-enhancing virtues and it is believed to have potential for controlling type 2 diabetes. Some studies also suggest it can encourage fat burning without the risk of sacrificing muscle mass.

In one mixed-sex study conducted in Scandinavia, 180 volunteers, all of whom had a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25 and 30, were split into three groups. The first group received one pill per day that provided 4.5g CLA (80%). The second group was given syrup (hidden in a capsule) that provided 3.6g CLA (76%). The third group was given a placebo capsule. No changes to diet or exercise were advised and the members of all three groups consumed a similar amount of calories per day.

The study ran for 12 months and the placebo group showed no noticeable change in weight by the end of this period. However, both CLA groups had lost around 4 pounds and also showed improvements in muscle mass.

Safflower oil is an ingredient derived from a thistle-like plant. It provides linoleic acid and CLA, but the CLA content is minimal. Some supplement manufacturers claim safflower oil’s fat burning abilities exceed those of CLA, and further state it can be particularly useful for targeting belly fat, but many experts claim this is not so.

However, a comparative study conducted in the USA suggests both ingredients may have merit as weight loss providers. The researchers recruited 55 obese postmenopausal women who suffered from type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted over two 16-week periods separated by a 4 week “washout” period. One group was given 8g of CLA per day, the other received 8g of SAF.

Only 36 of the volunteers completed the study, but the CLA group showed a reduction in BMI without any loss of muscle mass. The SAF group showed no reduction in BMI, but exhibited a reduction in trunk mass. This was accompanied by an increase in muscle mass, and fasting glucose levels were also lowered by a significant amount. The researchers concluded: “Supplementation with these dietary oils [CLA/SAF] may be beneficial for weight loss, glycaemic control, or both.”

Developt fails to say if side effects are likely, but pregnant or nursing mothers should always take an extremely cautious approach to supplementation and never use any product that has not been approved by their doctor. People who have existing health problems or are taking medication are also advised to seek medical advice before using any brand of dietary supplement.
