However, a comparative study conducted in the USA suggests both ingredients may have merit as weight loss providers. The researchers recruited 55 obese postmenopausal women who suffered from type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted over two 16-week periods separated by a 4 week “washout” period. One group was given 8g of CLA per day, the other received 8g of SAF.

Only 36 of the volunteers completed the study, but the CLA group showed a reduction in BMI without any loss of muscle mass. The SAF group showed no reduction in BMI, but exhibited a reduction in trunk mass. This was accompanied by an increase in muscle mass, and fasting glucose levels were also lowered by a significant amount. The researchers concluded: “Supplementation with these dietary oils [CLA/SAF] may be beneficial for weight loss, glycaemic control, or both.”
